I found my long-lost copy of 'Bored of the Rings', The Adventures of Dildo Bugger! Thought I'd lost it(the book. We already know;>). I started to look for it a while back when reading Sterling's Change series where a group of survivors take Tolkien's books as "Gospel Truth", a Traditional Wiccan founds a Clan and the SCA creates a kingdom under a Lord who uses LOTR imagry as well(His Flag is the Eye of Sauron).
In one of the books the kids of the Witch and the Evil Overlord are talking and the Witche's kid mentions 'BOTR' which shocks the fundie Catholic Princess Matilda.
I was afraid I'd lost it, since I hadn't read it in yrs....
Cheers,
Pat(who got a good laugh yesterday seeing a "Zombie Awareness" Ribbon on the back of a truck. It was almost as good as the "Zombies Against Palin...No Brains!!!!" Bumpersticker;>)

Not literally. EUUUUUWWWWW;>!!!! What I do love about them is they are one of the last Monsters that haven't been "Riced". No Teen girls or MiddleAged Housewives get moist reading about THESE Undead! They're just Ex-Human Human Predators....PERIOD.
They aren't Romanticized, Eroticized, etc. And that's a GOOD THING.
Traditionally, Monsters are Protagonists in Morality Tales of a culture. They are what happens when you flaught the Rules. Up until the late 80's(before Irony Horror became the standard), you could tell who the victims of the Monster(s) and who were the Heroes and/or Survivors. Not anymore. In much of modern Horror Hopelessness is the standard...no matter how Good a person you are or/and how hard you fight, you're DOOMED. Says a lot about our culture to me.
Now, this crap has slid into my fav Horror genre with such crap as the remake of 'Dawn of the Dead' and a number of novels. One of the things I like about "classic" Zombie flicks and books(as well as modern creations staying with the template) is that the Zombies thin the herd. The Slow, the Clueless, the Self-Delusional, etc are the victims in this genre. Also, there's the odd view of Realism. An Undead person is no stronger than a Living one...actually less(they're DECOMPOSING). They also have barely Animal Intelligence. They're a Human Plague. They're strength is that they keep going, never giving up....again, like a disease.
The modern "Fast Zombie", "Smart Zombie" or the really annoying "Spider/Gecko Zombie(that can climb on ceilings and such)ruin the tale. You might as well have Robots....
Cheers,
Pat
