Pretty......
Dec. 11th, 2011 12:36 pmOne of the things I love about this time of yr is that my fav seasonal houseplant comes into Bloom. Commonly called X-mas Cactus(though more properly called Holiday, since it naturally starts blooming after Thanksgiving and ends before Yule), the Schlumbergaria or Zygocactus(they keep changing it's name!)is an easy plant for me. I just repot in in Spring with some time release fertilizer, plop it in a semi-shady spot and bring them in as they come into bloom.Being daylight sensitive, you have to make sure it's not exposed to streetlights and such. They can handle anything down to the mid 30'sF...below I just drag them into the house until the Freeze is over.
The majority are NOIDs, plants bought at post hooliday sales though this Spring I made a point of trying some named cultivars. My fav so far is 'Thor Tenna', a shade of Pink that's unusual as well as Beautiful. I was disappointed with 'Limelight' as it did what all Yellows do for me, come out Brassy. The Old Fashioned hasn't bloomed so far. It's the 1st time I'd been able to find a source since I lost my original plant(given by an ex, long Passed now...)in 96 with California's Quarentine.
If you have a garage or a basement with windows that stay above Freezing these plants are an easy way to brighten up a home in the darker days of late Fall and early Winter...
Cheers,
Pat
